Wedding Day Makeup in the Midst of a Pandemic

Wedding Day Makeup in the Midst of a Pandemic

I love creating a wedding day makeup look with brides. I always feel honored to a part of one of the most special milestones in a woman's life. Seeing each bride’s face light up when she sees her reflection is the highlight of my day.

As a bridal makeup artist, most mornings I’ve spent with wedding parties involves a room filled with friends and family. I’m doing makeup while watching everyone enjoying mimosas and memories. Laughter fills the room and it is such a special time. 2020 weddings are shaping up to be a little different than most brides have anticipated.

With the current Pandemic, the scope of bridal beauty and the wedding
celebration has dramatically changed. Some brides have chosen to reschedule to next year. Many brides are choosing to forgo the large party and attendees to have an intimate gathering to keep their existing 2020 wedding date. A number of them are planning both. They’ll have their intimate ceremony this year and then in 2021 the large celebration they originally planned.

Currently, in NYS, the guidelines have not been released for when makeup services will be allowed to resume and what the limitations on services will be. This has left brides wondering what to do if they are having their mini wedding and still want to look special for their day.

Within the makeup artist community I am hearing a number of ideas. A makeup artist friend of mine is involved with a direct sales makeup company, so she is putting together a complete set of makeup products and brushes for her bridal clients to be able to apply their wedding day look themselves, should it be necessary.

If in-person contact is not an option, I recommend reaching out to your makeup artist to see what they can suggest. Since NYS is opening by region, it will depend on what Phase your area is currently in. Being allowed to work is not controlled by your makeup artist. Keep in mind things are very fluid, so having flexibility in your plan and a backup plan is a good idea.

An option I’m offering my bridal clients is a Pre-Wedding day video consult to see what products and tools they currently have that can be used to apply their own makeup the day of the wedding. I’ll then create a mini shopping list of items I recommend to complete their look. I will even create a face chart with product colors, their placement, and the proper brushes to use for reference.

The day of the wedding I can plan a video chat while the bride is applying her makeup which allows me to walk her through the process and calm any nerves she may have. At the bride’s request, I can arrange a group chat with her bridal party while she’s getting ready to replicate that feeling of the girls getting ready together. How fun to have the ladies drinking their mimosas from their homes, sharing stories and celebrating the bride!

If makeup artists are able to work, please understand that we are
working to the best of our ability under new circumstances we have never had to deal with in the past. Certain aspect of services may have to be omitted or altered. Services may take longer to accommodate the sanitation procedures needed to help keep everyone safe.

Regardless of what type of interaction is possible, whether by video or in person, makeup artists want to give you the best possible experience. At the end of the day, we all want you to feel special and to help create a little of the magic you had looked forward to on your day. If you don't have an artist, now may be the perfect time to reach out to one to see if they offer options that will fit with your newly revised vision.

And as I have always told all of my brides, well before any notion of a pandemic, there is only one true goal for the day and that’s to be married to the love of your life! Congratulations!
